Sights and Sounds of Pwani: The Arrival

The anticipation, endlessly seeking the sea

The giddiness at seeing it and gazing too long

No, that's from the sudden humidity surge as the plane lands

Stopover at Lamu, still reeling at the timelessness of the place

Endless mangrove and invisible airport terminal building

Sand everywhere: on the taxiway, stretching along Lamu coastline, in my sandals

Arrived in Malindi, guests are thrilled, not by the thoughts of sun, sand and sea

But of the mango tree at the airport entrance and the movie set on the runway

As random and quirky as what is in store for us

But otherwise Malindi beats to one heartbeat

Whilst the market is in full swing, the muezzin calls people to worship

Its Friday night and the sun sets, the darkness puts the senses at ease
